Living in Los Angeles long enough can most likely afford you the whole "yes, I remember them when..." saying at some point in your life. I don't have any close personal acquaintances who I can say that about just yet however I don't doubt that one day, if I live long enough, I will. Meet 2 people who I believe are on the right track in their respective careers.
I've known Joe Rubalcaba longer than most people in my cell phone address book. We met years ago at good old Cal State Long Bitch, he was in the R/TV/F department and I was in the Theatre Department. I can't remember exactly how we met but I know that our friendship bonded over long hours on student films where I served as Script Supervisor and he was either doing Sound or Producing or Directing. These days he's focusing solely on Directing and making quite a name for himself. Most recently he directed a ROCKIN' video for Manntis which has been playing on that box like object that emits picture and sound...television I think it's called. Headbangers Ball...is that still around or am I dating myself??? He also directed a video for the Pillowz...I mean Willowz (inside joke) which just today the LA Times featured as one of a select number of local bands that are "up and coming." He's got vision, that boy. He'll go far.
Now let's transition from moving pictures to still pictures. Craig Havens is a more recent newcomer to the landscape of friend-om however our time together has been so quality that it seems like I've known him for much longer. The other day I had the pleasure of taking a look at a bunch of his work and was very much impressed with his eye for images, people and abstraction in everyday life. His photographs make me want to stare at them for long amounts of time, digesting every little nuance. He's currently photographing the St. Vibiana's construction progress for Sir Tom Gilmore. And he's well on his way to becoming known by the general public by just his last name like all those other big name photographers out there.
And there you have it. My future "I knew them when" people. Maybe one day someone will say that about me.
x
