why?

So this weekend I was out and about, having fun with some friends and I started to get a headache. I immediately noticed this was a "bobby pin" headache, meaning that my hair was pulled up too tight and a bobby pin was digging into my scalp. I let the locks go and what resulted was shock and amazement from everyone. "Wow! Your hair is so beautiful! Why don't you wear it down??"

#1. I don't like the way I look with my hair down.
#2. It always gets in the way, however I like having long hair and wearing it up.
#3. I haven't had it cut in over a year. What's the point when you always wear it up?
#4. I don't like the way I look with my hair down.

Can someone please explain the attraction to the long hair thing. I just don't understand.

ho hum part 2

Many nights spent at the theatre and Shannon loses all ability to do fun, interesting, new things in LA to write about. I'm quickly losing readership, I can feel it. Stick with me, inspiration will come again. Promise.

fishin' for some lovin'

What has been keeping Shannon busy and not trolling the streets of L.A. as much as normal? The theatre, that's what.

Last weekend we opened Fish Out of Water in Shark City, written by emerging playwright Jonathan Caren who "has an ear for crisp, funny dialogue." It's a fun piece that keeps me entertained and definitely does not allow for any knitting in the booth!

Next week we open Love Bites vol. III & IV. Billed as "an evening of not so romantic shorts and dysfunctional comedies." I'm working vol. III and we tech this weekend. I'm sure it'll be funny and your typical Elephant fare with all of our wonderful actors trodding the boards....or whatever you call it.

Tickets are now available for the 2006 Neon Cruise, offered by the Museum of Neon Art. I've been on the cruise 3 times and have loved each and every outing. You can read about my last experience here. Or just skip to the good stuff, the pictures.

An e-mail arrived last week from my good friend Eric who leads the tours. This excerpt gives a good overview on what to expect. I can say from experience, bring a hat, scarf, gloves and winter coat. No matter how warm it is, when that double-decker bus gets going it WILL be freezing. Yes, even in the middle of summer.

The evening begins at 6:45 when the Museum of Neon Art opens its doors. Enjoy appetizers and wine while strolling through the museum's galleries of contemporary, electric artwork as well as the famed boneyard of vintage neon signage. Our convertible, double-decker bus leaves promptly at 7:30 when we hit the streets of downtown Los Angeles. Along with your affable guide (me!), you'll tour the Broadway Theater district, Chinatown, South Park, and even Skid Row to see the illuminated city. From there, the bus takes off for the sites of Hollywood, Fairfax, Wilshire, and Westlake. With two intermissions for shopping and (ahem!) drinking, the evening will end three hours later when the bus returns to the Museum of Neon Art.

and my favorite part...

...the Neon Cruise is not just a tour of neon signs, but an eclectic journey through nighttime Los Angeles and its history, culture, food, booze, architecture, rapidly multiplying lofts, and bizarre denizens.

If you're interested I highly recommend getting tickets early as they will sell-out. And if you're lucky I'll probably make an appearance at some point this next season, depending on my weekend availability.

for Katie, with love

23 years ago today Katie passed away. She was my grandmother. A firecracker of a woman, something that I hope to attain someday. She had pancreatic cancer and we knew the end was near. The selfish teenager in me kept praying that she wouldn't die on my birthday as I didn't want to have that memory for the rest of my life....so she picked Valentines' Day instead. In retrospect it makes sense. Today isn't about candy, chocolate, roses or hallmark greetings...it's about remembering Katie.

i jinxed winter

Back in October, or was it November, it rained for a day or two. Really it happened, I remember it vividly. Shortly thereafter I found myself in a Target gazing upon the most glorious pink rubber boots. Remembering the previous winter of 2004/2005 when it had rained bucket-loads all winter long I decided this year I would be prepared for the downpour that would eventually happen in this fair city.

I ended up wearing them once, it was raining one morning so I excitedly put them on and headed to work. By 2pm the sun was out and there was nary a cloud in the sky. Since then my pretty pink rubbers have sat in the closet gathering dust.

So there you have it, the real reason why this winter has consisted of 80 degree days and balmy tropical weather.
